GIVING OF ALMS
The Arabic word ‘tasadduk'-giving of alms was derived from the word ‘sidq' which means truthfullness.
Giving alm is described with this word because it expresses the honesty about following the commands of Allah The Most High. A Muslim shows his faithfullness, he confirms his belief in Allah as his Lord with spending for His Sake, using the favors that He gave again in a way that to attain His good pleasure.
Zekat-alms prescribed by Islam, tax for helping the poor- are also defined as ‘tasadduk'. Zekat purifies the wealth and it also indicates the honesty and sincerety in faith of the person who gives it.
Mehr-dowry paid by husband- is also defined as ‘sadaka'. This provides the excellence of marriage and also helps the faithfullness and loyalty between wife and husband.
Briefly sadaka is the expenditure that a person does from his wealth and other belongings just for the Sake of Allah The Most High. In The Holy Quran the word ‘tasadduk' is mentioned in its verb form:
“We ordained therein for them: "Life for life eye for eye nose for nose ear for ear tooth for tooth and wounds equal for equal." But if anyone remits the retaliation by way of charity it is an act of atonement for himself. And if any fail to judge by (the light of) what Allah hath revealed they are (no better than) wrong-doers.” (1)
When a debtor is in trouble, it is good to postpone his debt and it is more virtuous to donate it as alms. (2)
It is possible to forgive the blood money for a death that caused by mistake to the person who caused death without his own will, by the relatives of the dead. Here the word ‘tasadduk' has the sense to give as alms. (3)

The brothers of Prophet Joseph -peace be upon him- used the same word when they wanted an extra donation from their brother whom he couldn't know at once.
“Then when they came (back) into (Joseph's) presence they said: "O exalted one! distress has seized us and our family; we have (now) brought but scanty capital: So pay us full measure (we pray thee) and treat it as charity to us: for Allah doth reward the charitable.” (1)
As it is seen above ‘tasadduk' is making expenditure for The Sake of Allah and to donate something. Many holy verses of the Noble Quran and hadiths encourage believers to give of alms and announce the merits that the people who give them will attain.
‘Tasadduk' as a concept
In Islam all property, everything that seems as wealth indeed belongs to Allah. (2) Allah The Most High gives a part of it to people as a trial and examines them with it. (3) In this respect some people may be different from others about richness and worldly gains. But this is not a cause of superiority. Those who pass this examination perform the necessity of having wealth and make it abundant. They fulfill the real thanksgiving by making their goods useful for the other born servants of Allah.
The Noble Quran commands believers that “give alms” before the day comes in which there will be no friendship and dealings.
“O ye who believe! spend out of (the bounties) We have provided for you before the day comes when no bargaining (will avail) nor friendship nor intercession. Those who reject faith they are the wrong-doers.” (4)
After death some people will want to return world and give alms. The Noble Quran warns this kind of people and says that:
“And spend something (in charity) out of the substance which We have bestowed on you before death should come to any of you and he should say "O my Lord! why didst thou not give me respite for a little while? I should then have given (largely) in charity and I should have been one of the doers of good.”
“But to no soul will Allah grant respite when the time appointed (for it) has come: and Allah is well-acquainted with (all) that ye do.” (5)

The richness that people have is not for collecting and to accumulate or to dominate over people, not for becoming proud against them but to ask for the land of the next world and making use of it in this world. (1) To make use of it in this world is to spend it to meet the needs, asking for the land of the next world is to keep other people with this wealth and facilities for The Sake of Allah. The Noble Quran threatens the people with a bad end who collects the worldly gains but not spend them for the good pleasure of Allah. (2)
While the Noble Quran calls people to tasadduk- giving of alms, Satan frightens people by saying “you will become poor if you give alms” (3) . But Allah The Most High provides sustenance to the ones who make effort for His Sake in a way that even they can not expect. (4) Who gives something for The Sake of Allah, certainly, He also gives something in return of this. (5)
A believer should give alms from the best part of his goods. (6) He should try to give it secretly for not to hurt the pride of the people in need . (7). Alms are necer remind reproachfully. A pleasant word and forgiveness is better than an alms which is rubbed in. (8)
One should find a middle course while giving alms. Neither being too stingy nor being too open-handed and to spend recklessly is not proper. (9)
A believer starts giving alms from his relatives, parents and household. Because his all spending for them is considered as alms. (10)
Our Prophet-peace be upon him- declared that:
“The most valuable alms is the one which meets a need. Giving person is superior to taking one. Start giving alms from your family. (11)

Muslims care about their brothers and help them even when they themselves are in need, meet their needs and try to save them from troubles. The Noble Quran praises the ones who behave this way. (1)
Some dignified believers do not make known that they are in need because of their shyness. The man of wealth should find and help them. (2)
Briefly ‘ tasadduk' is an effort to pass the trial about wealth and it is also a way of social solidarity, helping one another and giving presents in Muslim society. The fondness of man for wealth diminishes by this way. Someone who shares his opportunities with others feels relieved; his ties of fraternity with others are strengthened. When we consider that many quarrels and wars are caused by the greed of having much more wealth, we can understand the importance of tasadduk for peace better. When we give of alms as Islam commands there will be no poor people, the greed for wealth will diminish, solidarity among people is provided and peace will acquire a permanent foundation. .
Moreover Our Lord who gave that wealth to people as a favor and trust wills us to attain His good pleasure, the endless favors in the next world and acquire merits much more.
For the spending that is done for The Sake of Allah, the intention should be only to attain His good pleasure and one shouldn't give alms for an ostentatious display. (3). ‘ tasaduk' with such a pure intention is like a seed that gives seven ears, each with a hundred grains. The return of the alms given for The Sake of Allah will be many times more as in this sample .(4)
Our Prophet-May Allah commends and salute him- declared:
“Those who give alms from pure things-that Allah accepts only them- All-Compassionate Allah take it with His right hand - with His Omnipotence- and grow it until it becomes like a mountain. (5)

“When a Muslim do some spending for the livelihood of his family and expects a merit from it, this will be considered as an alms for him ” (1)
“Whoever among you, if he can save himself from the fire-of Hell- even with a half date , he should do that.” (2)
For a Muslim, to acquire knowledge and teach them to other Muslims is also virtuous alms.
