ABSTAINING FROM SINS

The word ‘vera' means giving up and avoid sins and doubtful things - which are not clearly allowed in religion- Allah The Most High .declared as :

“And thy garments keep free from stain! (1)

Katade and Mucahid explained the command of cleaning the cloth in this verse as purifying the self from sins. Here cloth is a metaphor for self of man. Ibrahim Neha, Dahhak, Zuhri and other commentators of the Noble Quran who investigated closely, held this opinion. Arabs uses the phrase of “a person with clean clothe” to express the loyalty and keeping the word of a man. They describe the people who do not keep the promises, who are cruel and dissolute as “the person with dirty clothe”. As a commentary of this holy verse, Ubeyy b. Ka'b said “do not wear the dress on cruelty and sin but wear while you are absolutely clean. Said ibn Jubeyr said: Keep your heart and clothes clean, Hasan and Muhammed ibn Ka'b el Kurazzi said: “Make your moral qualities beautiful”. Just as water cleans the dirt and filth on the clothes ‘vera'-abstaining from sinful- also cleans the dirt in the heart. In this explanation, between dress and heart a relation is formed. . Because of that seeing a cloth in the dream is interpreted as heart and spiritual state. . One affects the other. All of ‘vera' is contained by the hadith of “Leaving of the person the things that are not connected with him is one of the evidences that he is a good Muslim. (2). This words compromises to leave all deeds that are not connected to the person all words, looks, listening, touching , walking, thinking and all other open or hidden thoughts and deeds. These words are enough to explain the subject of ‘vera'. Ibn-i Mace recorded this hadith that Abu Hureyre communicated: “If you have ‘vera' then you are the one who worship most among people” (3)

According to Sufis ‘vera' is: giving up and abstaining from all things other than Allah The Most High. Savants of Horasan said: “‘vera' is to abandon desires and doubtful things.”

Ibrahim ibn Edhem said: “‘vera' is leaving all doubts. To abandon useless things is to avoid the things that are unrelated to you.”

Shibli said: ‘Vera' is being a way from everything other than Allah The Most High.

Ishak b. Halef said: “'vera' abstaining from sinful in speaking is more difficult than the one about gold and silver- giving up worldly goods.” They said: Asceticism-giving up- about leadership is more difficult than asceticism about gold and silver. Because you spend gold and silver to attain leadership.”

Ebu Suleiman ed-Dârâni noted that: Just as the contentment is a tip for consent ‘vera' is the beginning of pious asceticism.

Yahya b. Muaz said about ‘vera': “It is to stand on the limits of knowledge without a deviation. It is of two kinds: Apparent ‘vera' and interior ‘vera'. The apparent one is: To act only for the Sake of Allah The Most High and interior ‘vera' is: To prevent the entering of the things to the heart other than Allah.” He added that: Those who do not pay attention of the details of ‘vera' cannot attain high donation.”

According to Yunus b. Ubeyd: ‘Vera' is to leave all doubts and self-criticism every moment. As Ebû Alî ed-Dakkâk communicated: When Hâris el-Muhâsibi extended his hand to a doubtful food, he understood that it is not canonically lawful, if a sweat appears on his fingertips.

Sehl b. Abdillah said: “Canonically lawful is the things in which people do not rebel against Allah. The purest of the lawful things is something in which Allah is not forgotten.” “ The person who has no ‘vera' is not satiated even if he eats the head of an elephant”

Hasan Basri went to Mecca . He saw that a Young man from the sons of Hadrat Ali was preaching to crowd while leaning on Kaaba. Hasan Basri approached him and asked:

-What is the essence of the religion? The young man said:

-It is ‘vera'-abstaining from sinful or doubtful things- . Hasan said:

-What is the disaster of religion? The young man answered:

 -It is avarice.

Hasan admired to the intelligence of the young man.

Also Hasan Basri himself said: “The slighest degree of ‘ vera' is better than a thousand ‘miskal' of worship. “

Abu Hureyre-May Allah be well pleased with him-said: The ones who will sit close to Allah on tomorrow (The Day of last Judgment) are the ones who have ‘vera' and pious asceticism.”

It is also communicated that Hadrat Abu Bakr said as follows: “We used to abandon seventy possibilities of religiously allowed things for not falling into the prohibited things”.

According to a narrative, Neha'i rented a saddle beast and his whip fell from his hand. He came down, fettered the animal, he turned and took the whip. People around said:

-Why didn't you turn the animal to the place where the whip fell and then took it? He answered:

-I rented the beast for going into this direction.

Again it is said that: The sister of Bishr el-hafi came to Ahmed ibn Hanbel and asked:

-We spin wool on the roof of our house. From the torchs of granary which pass close to us a light come to us. Is it religiously allowed to spin wool under this light?

Ahmed said: May Allah protect you. Who are you?

The woman said: I am the sister of Bishr el-Hafi. Ahmed cried and said:

-Your home produces true ‘vera'- abstaining from doubtful- . Do not spin wool under those lights.

It is said that: Rabia patched her torn dress under the light that comes from the palace of sultan. For some time her heart didn't find peace. Then she remembered what she did and tore the part that she sewed before. She found peace of heart again. (5)
