EVIL SUGGESTIONS

It’s counterpart in Arabic the word “ vesvese” literally means, whisper, rustling, hidden voice, whispering, the doubt comes out in the heart, indecision, suspicion, inner sorrow, the inner confusion that is caused by carnal mind-nefs- and Satan.

The opposite of “vesvese” is being doubtless, decided, firm and determined.

“Vesvese” is mentioned in four places in the Noble Quran. Allah is The Most High informs us that how satan made evil suggestions to Prophet Adam and to Mother Eve who were in Paradise:

“Then began satan to whisper suggestions to them bringing openly before their minds all their shame that was hidden from them (before): he said "Your Lord only forbade you this tree lest ye should become angels or such beings as live for ever.” (1)

Muslim savants made different interpretations about how Satan came into Paradise and how made evil suggestions to Prophet Adam and Mother Eve.

Again in the 120th verse of Chapter Taha, the evil doubt that Satan gave to Prophet Adam and Mother Eve is mentioned.

Another verse about “vesvese” is as follows:

“It was We who created man and We know what dark suggestions his soul makes to him: for We are nearer to him than (his) jugular vein.(2)

Again in this verse the Omnipotence of Allah stressed. He is the one who created man and gave him existence. He is informed everything about human, hidden or evident. He knows all thoughts and evil suggestions that one happens to think of. Our Prophet -peace be upon Him- said as making an explanation about this Verse: “ There is no doubt that Allah forgives and doesn’t regard as sin the things that people of my Umma (Muslims) happen to think, unless they do not tell and commit them. (2) Chapter Kaf, 50/16.
(3) Buhari, Itk/6; Iman/15; Nesei, Talak/22; Ibn Mace, Talak/16.

That information is mentioned in a verse about evil suggestions:

“1. Say: I seek refuge with the Lord and Cherisher of Mankind
  2. The King (or Ruler) of Mankind
3.The Allah (or Judge) of Mankind
 4. From the mischief of the Whisperer (of Evil) who withdraws (after his whisper)
 5. (The same) who whispers into the hearts of mankind 6.Among Jinns and among Men.” (
1)

Here the word “vesvas” -suggestor of evil - implies Satan, and evil suggestion is the work of him. The devils who make evil suggestions to man are two groups: One is devils from evil spirits-djinns- and other is from human beings. Those devils cause evil suggestions in people’s heart, dissuade from a good intention and lead them to commit bad behavior. They prevent them following the way of Allah and attain the virtue of being human. Finally they cause people to go out of faith and religion and lead them to endless disaster. Everything that keeps whispering to man’s heart, push him to unawareness-gaflet- and cause “vesvese” which is the start of all badness are defined as “hannas” -satanic- and “vesvas”-evil suggestor.

Doubtlessly the evil suggestions of Satan estrange man from faith, worship and good morals, cause various troubles in the lives of individuals, family and society. Muslims who lived around Medina used to bring to sell mutton and beef to the city. Some Muslims who hesitated to eat that meat went to Hadrat Muhammed-peace be upon him- and asked:

“O Apostle of Allah! Some people around Medina bring meat and sell them to us. We do not know that if those people pronounce The Name of Allah -Bismillahirrahmanirrahim- while they butcher the animals.” Thereupon Hadrat Muhammed -peace be upon him-: “say -bismillah- and then eat those meat” (2)

By this answer The Apostle of Allah indicated to avoid evil doubts.

Concerning another matter they asked to Hadrat Muhammaed-Peace be upon him- :

“O Apostle of Allah! During ritual worship when someone feels a doubt in his heart ‘if I lost my canonical purity -because of breaking wind-, is his pray invalidated or not? Hadrat Muhammed -Peace be upon him- answered: “No, if a noice or smell is not felt, that person shouldn’t cancel his worship.”

Here the Apostle of Allah advised to be abstaining from evil doubts and if someone has not an opinion about loosing canonical purity he shouldn’t give up ritual worship-namaz.

Also in the system of Muslim canonical jurisprudence namely-fiqh- badness of evil doubts is stressed. The words of someone who doubts about everything are not considered as valid. Hadrat Muhammed didn’t accept the man’s words of divorce of his wife who always acted with doubt. (1) That means he didn’t accept as valid the divorce of a man who is in doubts about if he divorced his wife or not and about his own words.

As it seen above both in the Noble Quran and in the Sunnah ( practices and rules derived from the Prophet’s word and habits ) having evil doubts -vesvese- is considered as a bad habit. Especially in all verses about ‘vesvese’ it is indicated that evil suggestions and doubts are caused by Satan. According to this, Islam ordered to avoid these thoughts. Because “vesvese” is not something useful on the contrary it is harmful. Who is caught by evil suggestions and doubts makes mistakes in his worship, falls into various faults and can’t find pleasure in what he does. “vesvese” lead someone to false and incorrect ways.

Even one may lose his mind when these suggestions and doubts become excessive.
